Why healthy living is important
Healthy living is important for all of us. Our health behaviours make a difference to our long-term health We can think about the good habits that we want to learn. We can think about unhelpful habits that we want to change. People with intellectual disability do not often get a chance to think about these habits. This module provides the information and tools to help people decide what health habits they want to change, find out what they might need to support that change, and then plan so it can happen.
Exploring topics
The different topics in healthy living can feel big. It is important to keep the process manageable and be respectful of the person’s energy levels. Supporters should let the person choose which area they want to start with. Keep the sessions short – you can revisit it if you need to. It does not have to be done all at once and can be part of an ongoing conversation over days or weeks.
There are worksheets to help people explore what is important to them. Each worksheet begins with Like/OK/Don’t like/I don’t know. We use this as a gentle entry point so people can explore feelings without pressure. Validate all responses – even “I don’t know”. Remember, the person might have different feelings about a topic than you do. Notice patterns in how people respond – are they anxious, tired, or have specific sensory needs? This helps the person feels understood before moving into deeper questions.
